Wanting to harm myself

Advice you have sent in

Having urges to self harm can feel very distressing and frightening. We might be facing difficult situations or life events that can lead us down the path of wanting to self harm as a means of trying to deal with the painful thoughts and feelings. However, there are other ways of coping and it's important to discover alternatives to self harm that still give us a sense of emotional release but in a way that is kind, supportive and much less destructive to ourselves and our wellbeing.

Finding new ways of coping takes time and sometimes it's a case of trial and error. What works for me may not work for you. When you are feeling in a bit more resilient and in a calmer headspace explore sensory objects and items that bring you comfort i.e. a blanket, or stroking a pet. Are there any particular smells that you find calming such as lavender or citrus? Are you someone that finds physical activity helpful such as running or dancing? Maybe you're crafty and enjoy having a creative focus and outlet.

If you are feeling distressed and wanting to self harm see below some alternative tips and other resources that might be helpful.

  • Have a cold shower/splash cold water on your face (I find the shock of the cold water on my skin quite distracting from my ruminating thoughts)

  • Screw and rip up pieces of paper

  • Punch a pillow or cushion

  • Play your favorite song as loud as you can and dance around the room

  • If you feel safe enough to do so go for a brisk walk with a family member or friend. I find the act of physically moving my body can help shift some of the distress and tension.
